Abstract
Background & Objective: Bone densitometry is an appropriate method for the evaluation of the patients’ skeletal status. This study was done to determine, the relationship between MI (Mental Index) of mandibular bone in panoramic radiography and skeletal status in femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae (L2-L4) in women referring to the radiology department.
Materials & Methods: In this cross sectional descriptive study, the panoramic radiographs of 67 healthy women over 35 years old referring to radiology department Mashhad, Iran during 2004, were assessed and their MIs recorded. All of the patients were then referred to Toos Bone Densitometry Center, for bone densitometry in left femoral neck and lumbar vertebrae (L2-L4), using DEXA technique with Osteocore apparatus. The patients were divided into three categories of normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic in each skeletal region according to their T-score. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient.
Results: The mean of Mental Index between normal and osteopenic subgroups of skeletal status in femoral neck showed a significant difference (P=0.042). The mean of Mental Index between normal and osteoporotic and osteopenic and osteoporotic subgroups of skeletal status in lumbar spine region showed a significant differences (P=0.02 & 0.05, respectively). The Mental Index was significantly related to T-scores in femoral neck and L2-L4 regions (r = 0.33 & 0.32, respectively, P<0.01).
Conclusion: This study showed that using Mental Index of mandibular bone can be useful for estimating skeletal status of patients but is not enough for precise evaluation of skeletal status of patients.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Impacted molars teeth, especially third molar, are important in most branches of medical sciences. The angular position of molar teeth is in side effects and therapeutic regiment. This study was conducted to determine the angle of the impacted mandibular third molars. Materials and Methods: This descriptive study was carried out on 429 patients (269 men and 160 women) selected for surgery on impacted mandibular third molar in the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic in Gorgan, Iran during 2010-11. Pre-operative diagnosis was done by physical examination and OPG radiography. Demographic characterstics including age, gender, ethnicity, impaction angle were recorded for each subject. Data were analyzed using SPSS-16, independent t-test and chi-square test. Results: Totally, 480 impacted third molars were studied. Mean age of patients was 26.06±6.21 years. Impaction of the third molar was more prevalent among men (62.7%) than women (38.30%). Impacted mandibular third molar of 189 people (44.1%) were in left side in 200 people (46.6%) were in right side and in 40 people (9.3%) were bilateral. According to impaction angle, mesioangular (41.7%) and distoangular (3.5%) types had the highest and the lowest frequency, respectively. In bilateral cases, the mesioangular-mesioangular type (48.8%) was the most prevalent. The mesioangular type was the most prevalent in all ethnic groups. The most prevalent angular position of the impacted third molar was the mesioangular type in both sexes. Conclusion: This study showed that the most prevalent angular position of impacted mandibular third molar is the mesioangular type.

Abstract
Background and Objective: Impacted mandibular third molars (M3Ms) should be treated promptly after diagnosis. This study aimed to determine the frequency of facial skeletal patterns among individuals with impacted M3Ms.
Methods: This retrospective descriptive-analytical study examined 312 lateral cephalometric radiographs and 312 panoramic radiographs from patients (130 men and 182 women; mean age, 23.51±2.73 years) with bilateral impacted M3Ms who attended the Department of Orthodontics at Babol Dental School during 2009-2021 (a 12-year period). Sagittal skeletal patterns were assessed using the ANB angle and Wits appraisal. Facial type was classified as mesofacial, brachyfacial, or dolichofacial using the facial axis angle. Mandibular length was measured and classified as short, normal, or long. The degree of M3M impaction was assessed radiographically using Winter's classification and the Pell and Gregory system.
Results: The dolichofacial growth pattern was the most common (39.7%), followed by brachyfacial (34.0%) and mesofacial (26.3%) patterns (P<0.05). Skeletal Class I was the most common (44.6%), followed by Class II (40.4%) and Class III (15.1%) (P<0.05). A long mandible was observed in 45.8% of participants, a short mandible in 30.8%, and a normal mandibular length in 23.4% (P<0.05). The most common M3M angulation was mesioangular (50.0%), followed by vertical (33.0%), horizontal (10.3%), and distoangular (6.7%) impactions (P<0.05). According to the Pell and Gregory classification, Class A and B impactions (45.8% each) were considerably more common than Class C impactions (8.3%). Regarding the ramus relationship, P1 (47.4%) and P2 (44.9%) were more common than P3 (7.7%) (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The dolichofacial pattern, a long mandible, and skeletal Class II were the most common characteristics among patients with impacted third molars. Mesioangular, Class A/B, and P1 were the most common impaction types. These findings highlight a possible association between facial skeletal morphology and third-molar impaction.
